15 May Culture and the Media
Right first things first-you have to watch TEAM TALK!
But be warned you will need to know what your favourite sandwich filler is….. !!
So here’s a question: how wise are you?
What have you learnt about WISDOM from the last blog I wonder?
The reason I mention wisdom is because this week our theme is CULTURE and the MEDIA. And when it comes to handling CULTURE and MEDIA we all need wisdom. This is such a massive topic and I hope you are challenged by some of the thoughts outlined here. You don’t need to answer all the questions-but have a good think about them.
One of the reasons we need wisdom is because Culture is something that changes a lot. Have a look at this clip to see what I mean.
High Schools by the way are for Years 10-13.
It’s interesting that when you see the clips from 2014 how many high school students are on their phones! And that’s still 6 years ago!
Phones themselves are constantly changing. Take a look at this…
I guess the point I’m trying to make is that CULTURE, which could include for example technology, fashion, music, art, even values and belief systems-constantly changes.
But God’s words to us? That never changes.
In fact if something is true, that makes it timeless. It never changes, regardless of what society says.
So we need to be careful how much we allow the popular culture of today affect us.
MEDIA
The Media has a big part to play in our culture because the Media can do two very influential things:
- It can consume our time
- It can consume our thoughts
Whatever affects your time and thoughts has the power to affect your attitudes and values. And your attitudes and values have the power to affect behaviour and culture.
Recent Statistics in the US show that:
YouTube was the most used social media app among teens in 2019, followed by Instagram and Snapchat, TikTok became the fastest growing new app for American teens in 2019.
I wonder what kind of Media you use the most?
For me definitely YouTube, although probably wouldn’t have made the survey being somewhat older than 18!
Did you also know that in 2019, the average 8 to 12 year-old American spent four hours and 44 minutes looking at screens each day and those aged 13 to 18, used entertainment screen media for an average of seven hours and 22 minutes!
I wonder, how much time do you spend looking at your Screen Media…everyday?
You know the MEDIA can be an amazing thing as can CULTURE. I love the way Christians across the world have risen to the challenge of creating online Church through various media platforms. After all, the Church was never about the building, it’s about us the people! But like I said at the start, JUST BE WISE how you use it.
HERE’S SOME CREATIVE EXAMPLES OF THE CHURCH USING MEDIA IN LOCKDOWN
These really made me laugh…
And this example speaks for itself-AMAZING USE OF CULTURE AND MEDIA!
So some more NEWS-I hope you enjoyed the Youth Slot during last Sunday Morning’s Service. I thought it was fab. THANK YOU!
It’s still not too late to send in your video clips to the church as we may be doing another Youth slot very soon-watch this space!
Right then, I’m now going to hand over to Jon who is taking this week’s
FINAL THOUGHTS
Have a fabulous week everyone-like the words of the song, you are blessed. And you are blessed to be a blessing!!
