Friendship

Friendship

Hi everyone-it’s Good Friday-and in two days it’s Easter Sunday, when you will probably be eating a lot more chocolate! I however seem to have been eating lots more chocolate during the last three weeks (I’ve had to increase my running mileage) so will definitely be being a little stricter with myself on Sunday!

Check this Crème Egg out….

On a more serious note though, I want us to think about why we as the church, remember and celebrate Good Friday and Easter Sunday? For example how often have you really stopped to think about why Good Friday is called GOOD’ Friday? After all this is the day we mark the crucifixion of Jesus and what could be good about that?

‘The earliest known use of “guode friday” is found in The South English Legendary, a text from as early as 1290. According to the standard US Catholic school text used from 1885 to the 1960s, Good Friday is called good because Christ “showed His great love for man, and purchased for him every blessing”.

This brings me to the central theme of this week’s blog: FRIENDSHIP.

Good Friday is good because Jesus showed his great love for us by dying on the cross so that not only could we receive eternal life, but that we could know Jesus as a FRIEND.

I love this scripture because Jesus is showing us in words what the greatest of all friendships involves-laying down our lives for our others. And of course Jesus didn’t just speak about it, He went and did it! We may not have to suffer in the same way Jesus did, but the challenge to all of us is that we can still try and put our friends first in our daily lives – and I guess that also includes family!

A FRIEND is someone you can STRENGTHEN with your prayers.

A FRIEND is someone you can BLESS.

See how the penguin blesses his friend!

A FRIEND is someone you can ENCOURAGE.

This a good link giving some tips on just that:

Below is a great song about friendship with Jesus, What A Friend I’ve Found written by Delirious and performed by Hillsong. As you listen to the song I would like to leave you with this thought and challenge for the week ahead.

How can I invest in my friendship with God?

And so as I come to the end of this week’s blog, just consider what Jesus said on the cross ‘It is finished.’ This short Easter video reminds us of what Jesus has done for us. Our friend as well as our Saviour.

HE ACHIEVED EVERYTHING AT THE CROSS-AND ON THE THIRD DAY GOD RAISED HIM FROM THE DEAD. Yay!

Have a great Easter everyone!
